"Grant Merciful Radhasoami Thy Grace and Protection"}

An English rendering of a verse composed by Sant Radhaswami Sahab taken from the book titled "Satsang Yoga , Part II" by Maharshi Mehi Paramhans ji Maharaj.

http://blog.360.yahoo.com/praveshksingh ).

The Original Verse (Phonetic Version):

"Too to surat jamaa nabh dwaar| Shabd mile chhoote janjaar||

Shabd bhed too jaan ganwaar| Kyon bharamai too mana kee laar||

Surat khainch tak til kaa dwaar| Dahinee dishaa shabd kee dhaar||

Baaeen dishaa kaal kaa jaar| Taahi chhod kar surat samhaar||

Ghantaa sankh suno kar pyaar| Tis ke aage dhun omkaar||

Sunn maahi sun raarankaar| Bhanwar gufaa murali jhankaar||

Sattalok dhun been samhaar| Alakh Agam dhun kahun na pukaar||

Radhaswami bhed sunaayaa jhaad| Pakad dharo ab hiye manjhaar||"

The Translation:

[Fix or still your gaze at the door in the (Inner) Sky,|

So as to grasp the (Quintessential) Sound perceiving which puts all the worldly troubles to an end (the botheration of the world can end, in true sense, only if the cycle of rebirth is got rid of or transcended.)||

Learn, O Inexperienced, the secret of the Sound.|

Why do you remain lost in the illusory traps of the mind? ||

Draw or collect your attention, or current of consciousness, and look attentively at the `Til Dwar' or `The Third Eye'. |

(When the surat gets focussed at the Bright Point inside), a Stream of Sound is heard coming from the right direction. ||

(The sound emanating from) the left direction is the snare or web of Death.|

Discarding or ignoring that (that is, not listening to the sound coming from the left direction) keep your attention carefully focussed (on the Sound coming from the right direction).||

Listen with love to the Sounds of the Gong/Bell and Conch.|

Beyond that is (heard) the resonating `OM' Sound. ||

(Subsequently,) Hark to the `Rarankaar' Sound in the Realm of "Shoonya" (Void). |

Melody of the Flute (is heard) in the "Bhanwar Gufaa" (whirling/spiralling cave). ||

Listen to the enchanting lute in the Realm of Sattalok (The sphere of pure consciousness, of Quintessential Sound).|

Nothing can be said to be of the Sound in the Regions of Alakh and Agam (According to universally agreed opinion of Santmat and the Upanishads, beyond the zone of sattalok, lies the infinite realm of "nihshabdam paramam padam" or, the Highest/Ultimate State of Soundlessness. It is this very state that is being alluded to here). ||

Radhaswami says, he has thus clearly explained all the secrets. |

Hold that dearly within your heart.||]

Earn the Invaluable Wealth of Shabd! -Sant Radhaswami Sahab

An English rendering of a verse composed by Sant Radhaswami Sahab taken from the book titled "Satsang Yog , Part II" by Maharshi Mehi Paramhans ji Maharaj.

-Translation by Pravesh K. Singh (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sant_santati
http://blog.360.yahoo.com/praveshksingh ).

The Original Verse (Phonetic Version):

"Shabd kamaae kar he meet | Shabd prataap kaal ko jeet ||

Shabd ghaat too ghat me dekh | Shabdahi shabd peev ko pekh ||

Shabd karm kee rekh kataave | Shabd shabd se jay milaave ||

Shabd binaa sab jhoothaa gyaan | Shabd binaa sab thothaa dhyaan ||

Shabd chhod mat are ajaan | Radhaswami kahai bakhaan ||"

The Translation:

[O friend! Earn the `Shabd' (Divine Word or Sound). | By the glorious grace of the `Shabd', win over time (death & rebirth). ||

Behold the banks (realm or sphere) of `Shabd' within your `ghat' (body). |

Catching hold of `Shabd' after `Shabd' see the Lord ||

`Shabd' enables to obliterate or erase the result or effect of our actions. |

One `shabd' naturally leads to another `Shabd'. ||

Any knowledge without knowing, or in the absence of, or excluding `Shabd' is false knowledge or ignorance. |

All meditation that excludes `Shabd' is hollow, or incomplete meditation. ||

Do not ever, therefore, forsake the `Shabd', You Ignorant Being! ||

Radhaswami describes thus in detail. ||]

N.B.

To understand the true import of "shabd shabd se jay milaave" (one `Shabd' leads to another `Shabd') of Sant Radhaswami Sahab, the following excerpts from a discourse of Maharshi Santsewiji would be of help:

"Whoever sincerely practices the inner meditation comes to experience Light within. First he sees the Light and then he hears Sound, too. Sound has a natural & inherent property of attracting or drawing the listener towards its source or origin. One who is capable of grasping the Sound springing straight from God Himself gets naturally drawn to Him.

The practitioner of "naadaanusandhaan" or "surat-shabda yoga" (the Yoga of Sound or the Union through Sound) first catches hold of the Sound which is generated at the centre of the "sthoola mandal" (gross sphere of creation). Catching that Sound at the meeting horizon or junction of the Gross sphere and the "sookshma mandala" (Astral or Subtle sphere), he (the practitioner) is drawn to the centre of the Astral sphere. Grasping the Sound at the centre of the Astral sphere he is led to the centre of the "kaaran mandal" (Causal sphere) wherefrom he is pulled up to the centre of the "mahaakaaran mandal" (Supra-Causal sphere). Getting hold of the Sound at the centre of the Supra-Causal sphere he transcends the barrier or layers of "jad" (ignorance or non-consciousness) and makes an entry into the realm of "kaivalya" or, "chetan" (Pure Consciousness). There he gets the "saar shabda" or "anaahat shabda" (the Unstruck or Quintessential Sound) which takes him to the "nihshabdam paramam padam" or the highest and the Ultimate Soundless State. There he meets and merges into perfect unison with God losing his individual identity completely. Thus, the cycle of birth and death or transmigration comes to be destroyed or annihilated for ever or permanently."

For many, HealthyLife.Net is the fulfillment of a Vision for a more meaningful, constructive right-use of broadcasting, a yearning by many for a very long time, filling a real void in our media wasteland ........ that missing holistic channel we've been searching for. Santmat: Definition & Principles

                                                                                                                      Sant Mat Fellowship:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SantMatFellowship
{"Repeat the Name of your Beloved, day and night, again
and again. With care in thought, word and deed, you will
cross to the other shore." -- Dadu}

Santmat, translated variously as The Point of View of Sants, Teachings of Mystics, or the Way of Sages etc. has a long history of its own. References to it may be found even in Goswami Tulsidas ji's Ram Charit Manas:

"Ihaan na pacchapaat kachhu raakhaun |

Ved puraan santmat bhaakhaun ||"

[Here we don't entertain any sort of partisan attitude; we state the ideas contained within Vedas, Purans and Santmat].

What we call as `sants' in modern times were known as `rishis' of Vedic age. Some regard Lord Buddha as the first sant of modern times. Kabir Sahab, Guru Nanak Sahab, Goswami Tulsidas ji, Sant Mira Bai, Sant Surdas ji, Sant Ravidas ji, Sant Dadu Dayalji, Sant Paltoo Sahab, Sant Dariya Sahab, Sant Charandas ji, Sant Sahjo Bai, Sant Tukaram ji, Sant Namdev ji etc are only a few of sants to name that belonged to modern times. But the formal usage of the term `Santmat' is traced to Sant Tulsi Sahab of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Subsequently, several branches of Santmat came into existence such as those after the names of Sant Radhaswami of Agra, Baba Devi Sahab of Muradabad, Baba Jaimal Singh of Beas (Radhaswami Satsang (Beas)) etc. all of which have played key roles in propagating the ideals of Santmat to the different parts of the world.

Maharshi Mehi {Paramhans ji Maharaj (28.04.1885 – 08.06.1986)}, one of the most eminent disciples of Baba Devi Sahab, was one of the greatest ever exponents of Santmat. His greatest contribution was that he very meticulously & diligently examined the quintessence, the underlying postulates of Vedas, Upanishads, Shrimad Bhagwad Gita, literature of various sants, commentary of contemporaries such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekanand etc., and came up with a sound conclusion that there is no inconsonance whatsoever between the wisdom of the Ancient Scriptures and the Sermons and discourses of modern saints, that both unequivocally convey the same central idea or message. He wrote several books to lend credence to his inferences.

As the gist of the whole of his intensive research into literature and his own direct experience, he made a loud & confident proclamation that the scriptures and saints are essentially in unison and that any view to the contrary is wholly unfounded and worthy of rejection. He firmly opines that one has to accept the Upanishads as the base, the foundation of the Santmat because the most sublime and the loftiest of the techniques of meditation known as Naadaanusandhaan or Surat Shabd Yoga (The Yoga of Divine Sound) in which Santmat takes utmost pride, have been scintillating in all their splendour resting, since times immemorial, on this very terra firma called the Upanishads.

Thus, the greatest and most unique contribution of Maharshi Mehi was that he brought together, bridged the gulf that had come to separate not only the Holy Scriptures and the Santmat but also the different traditions or sects of sants from each other.

He very diligently drafted the definition and principles of Santmat which are included in his book "Mehi Padavali" consisting of his own compositions mostly in verse form. Presented below is an English translation of the definition and principle of Santmat, as drafted by Maharshi Mehi Paramhans ji Maharaj, excerpted from his above book.

-Translated by Pravesh K. Singh

Definition:

· `Shanti' or phonetically`Shaanti' , (meaning `Peace') is defined as stillness, equability, calmness, or motionlessness.

· Those who have attained `shaanti' are called sants.

·The views or the virtuous ways of sages are known as `Santmat'.

· The urge or impetus to acquire `shaanti' is so natural to human heart. Inspired by the same urge, the `rishis' or sages (who are said to have visualised the mantras - which were later compiled in the form of Vedas & Upanishads - during their meditation) in ancient times, made all-out attempts in search of `shaanti' and described the ideas or ways to obtain it (`shaanti') in Upanishads for the beneficence of common people. Sants such as Kabir Sahab, Guru Nanak Sahab etc. also expounded thoughts or ideas resembling or identical to these (ideas expressed in the Upanishads) in their local languages such as Bhaaratee (Hindi), Punjabi etc. These very ideas or thoughts are termed as `Santmat'. However, the sacred verses of the Upanishads particularly have to be acknowledged to be the basic foundation or the bedrock of the Santmat, for the highest knowledge or wisdom and the precise principal means to attain that wisdom namely, the 'naadanusandhaan' or 'surat shabd yoga' (the subtler and the subtlest meditation of Santmat, in which the practitioner meditates upon the Divine Sound/Vibration that springs directly from the God), in which Santmat takes so much of pride have been dazzling brilliantly eked or engraved on this very terra firma since times immemorial. Because of the appearance of sants in different times (ages) and different countries, and because of different nomenclatures of Santmat sects after the different names of these sants by their followers, the views of sant might appear to be different or separate from each other. However, if the views of all the sants are analysed dispassionately, discarding the grosser & outer drapes or coverings and the sectarian thoughts, and the essence of the teachings of sants is gleaned or extracted, it would emerge that there is an essential underlying unity in the views of all the sants (of all times, of all regions & of all religions the world over).

Principles:

· That Absolute (superlative) entity alone who is without a beginning & without an end, without any limits (boundaries) , unborn (without birth), unintelligible or imperceptible to senses, all-pervading and even beyond all the spheres of nature (while at the same time pervading all of these) should be regarded as the `Lord of All' and the underlying base or essence of all-that-exists. Further, That who (in His pure form) lies beyond the realms of the lower orders of (`aparaa prakriti' or `jad prakriti' or the gross creation) creations as well as the higher orders of (`paraa prakriti', or `chetan prakriti' or conscious creation) nature, that which transcends both the attribute-less- ness (that which is beyond the three `gunas' or qualities) as well as the attributes (the three qualities of `Satva', `raj' and `tama'), He who is without a beginning and without an end, unfathomable and possessed of infinite power, that who is beyond the mind, intellect and senses, that absolute authority which makes this whole nature (all the universe & its systems) operate or run systematically just like a gigantic machinery, that who is neither an individual person nor anything manifest, that who is devoid of all the varied expanses of illusion in any form whatsoever, that beyond which no empty space can exist, that who is the most eternal, the most ancient and has been in existence before anything else, that, precisely that, is regarded as the Highest Spiritual Title or Rank, or the Supreme Sovereign Lord of the Highest spiritual Order, the Lord of All or God.

· `Jivatma' , phonetically `jeevaatmaa' (Individual soul attached with the body) is the inseparable or undividable part of the Supreme Sovereign.

· Nature has a beginning and an end, and has been created.

· Individual soul ensnared in `maayaa' or illusion remains trapped in the cycle of births and deaths. To remain thus is at the root of all its miseries and afflictions. Devotion to God is the only way out of these miseries and afflictions.

· Man alone is eligible or entitled to attain salvation becoming one with the God, by performing devotion to Him, the Supreme Sovereign, through practice of `Maanas Jap' (internally chanting the sacred mantra given by the Guru without moving either the tongue or the lips), `Maanas Dhyaan' (visualising internally the form of the Guru or the desired deity), `Drishti Saadhan' (focussing attention or the current of consciousness at the specified point in the inner sky as taught by the Guru) and `Surat Shabd Yoga' (Meditating on the Divine Sound in the inner sky).

· Human beings desirous of accomplishing this lofty goal must abstain from committing the five greatest of sinful acts namely, to lie, to consume or take intoxicating substances (such as tobacco, drugs, wine, etc...), to commit adultery, to commit violence (including harming other creatures and/or eating non-vegetarian food) and to steal.

· Besides, the five virtuous acts namely, unmoving faith or belief in one God, rock-solid determination or conviction to realise or find Him within, honest selfless service of Guru, keeping good company (of saints, sayings of saints & sacred scriptures, etc.) and rigorous practice of meditation should be considered as the means to Total Liberation (from cycle of births & deaths).

Document: PRAKASHMANI GITA

(Surat Shabd Yoga Sadhana)

Translated from the Hindi by Mahant Jagdish Das Shastri
Edited by Dr. J. Das, Kabir Association of Canada

Who was Prakashmani?

Prakashmani was a great scholar of spirituality and was the first acharya (head) in line of Guru Kabir who wrote several great literatures since the first disciple Dharamdas. This Gita is a theological explanation of the inner path to reach God realization in this life.

Chapter 1.

Mangalacharan:  Salutation.

Salutation to Satguru Kabir Saheb who is the ocean of mercy and bliss. We offer humble salutation to get a drop of that bliss. Prakashmani Nam Saheb speaks of the greatness of Kabir. The word Kabir means great. Those people who wish to get salvation and bliss should know, first of all, that bliss is already their true nature. A drop of that bliss can intoxicate others. For it, many munis and rishis gave up worldly pleasures. Kabir Saheb explained the greatness of God, and that we should bow down to Him to realize bliss.

The "Word" (Shabda) is guru, and it removes worldly bondage and confers salvation quickly. It breaks the bondage of worldly existence and removes all the sins. The Word will support all devotees who follow the guru's teachings and obtain eternal life.

The Satguru imparts knowledge of Surati Shabd Yoga, and control of the mind and senses. When both are controlled, we glimpse the essence of everything. Thus we bow down to Him that reveals this essence.

The Satguru came into the world to remove bondage from the souls. Those who had positive and good thoughts and pure hearts came close to Him. He showered his grace on them and freed them from the worldly bondage. Whenever the devotees called for him, he appeared and, with the power of the Word, alleviated their suffering and taught them the essence of all knowledge. We need to take refuge in the Satguru who is the manifestation of the Word.

All the souls in the world desire to know their real nature. The soul that resides in all of us is called Jiva. But what is Jiva? Jiva is the destination, or the object of meditation. He is Himself the meditator, the act of meditation and the object of meditation, which is a state of non-duality. He is thus the knowledge and the guru. He is immortal and is the Inner Light of every living being, as the Light of Consciousness. I bow down to Him. His Word is like the boat that takes people across this worldly ocean. Who created that boat?  Kabir Saheb. Again I bow down to him. I pray to his Light that destroys all the darkness of ignorance. With his power, the water of his washed feet brought life to dry branch of a banyan tree. Again I bow down to him.

When a devotee performs his devotion with pure thoughts, then Satguru bestows on him the gift of God's name (initiates him into the secret of the Name). The devotee then attains liberation (moksha). It is, therefore, the duty of the devotee to serve the Satguru and have all his karmic bondage and fear of birth and death removed.

Devotee: O Satguru, ocean of compassion! Please explain to me the significance of Nij Nam, by which the Sar Shabd (Essence of the Word) would manifest in my heart.

Satguru: Nij Nam is that which enlightens a person. It is for the welfare of the soul. It is also called Sar Nam and Adi Nam. It is the means by which the soul obtains liberation. Though there are many names, one does not obtain salvation through them. But when one meditates on Nij Nam and realizes it in the depth of his heart, he is assured of salvation.

What is Nij Nam? Nij means the Self or Atma (Soul). Nam is the reality of the Self. Atma is Sat which means Eternal Existence. Sat also has the attribute of making the devotee realize his own "form" i.e. to know himself. Therefore, those who want salvation mus
